Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 1973

Oblivion

Review:
The opening bars of this classic album by Mike Oldfield were heard by audiences that packed theaters to witness one of the scariest films of all time--The Exorcist. And it wasn't long before this debut release, not only from Oldfield but also from Richard Branson's new record label, Virgin, found itself in the upper echelons of pop charts around the world. Primarily an instrumental album, with performances on almost every instrument credited to Oldfield, it takes the listener into widely varying musical territories, ending as Viv Stanshall formally announces each instrument as it joins the mix. --Paul Clark

VA - Buddha Bar Nature

Oblivion

Review from amazon:
This, the first Buddha-Bar CD/DVD, follows the seventh successful Buddha-Bar CD (released in February 2005). The nature theme is one of the major concerns of the 21st century, and it corresponds to the Buddha-Bar spirit. Allain Bougrain Dubourg, known for his TV documentaries about nature across the world, and Arno Elias, whose talent as a composer is also widely recognized, produced twelve pieces of music that lead us on a visual journey through the wild world of nature. A marvelous spectacle of animal and plant life, from dolphins dancing in the waves to tropical forests, to a leopard attack, the DVD is bursting with emotion. The Buddha-Bar team hopes that the beauty of the wildlife depicted will remind us also of its fragility, and therefore, the respect we owe it.

Herbert von Karajan - Neujahrskonzert In Wien (New Year's Concert) 1987

Oblivion

Description:
For the lightness and lilt, one need look no farther than Herbert von Karajan's New Year's Day 1987 offering with the Vienna Philharmonic. Playing to the manner born, the Viennese are on their very best behavior for Karajan and summon every last nuance out of the music. Kathleen Battle sings the Voices of Spring exquisitely, and every one of the performances vibrates with life. --Ted Libbey

Elizabeth Shepherd - Besides

Oblivion

Review:
Following on from Start To Move, this is a collection of B-sides and remixes (geddit?), which put together some of our favourites from over there and over here.

Tracks that didn’t make the original album include some rather good cover versions like Lionel Hampton’s ‘Midnight Sun’ and Pierre Leduc’s ‘Soya’. The best of the lot is Chick Corea’s ‘Open Your Eyes’.

Whether it’s her own material or covering other songs, she’s got a great ability to include elements of soul, jazz, funk, blues, Latin and even lounge. Admittedly, the Jamie Cullemesque ‘One Trump Card’ sitting next to a spacey-house remix of ‘Circles’ is a bit of an odd pairing but Alister Johnson gets the feel just right. It’s also interesting to compare the trio version of ‘Just Getting By’ she did in session for Gilles Peterson and the transformation by Eddy Meets Yannah; love big strings and synths.

If you’re an impatient type, you’ll be heading straight for the Nostalgia 77 and Natural-Self remixes. ‘Start To Move’ is going to be the 12” release (with instrumental) together with three versions of ‘Reversed’ (including the Gilles Peterson Maida Vale version)

There’s a jazz-dance version of ‘George’s Dilema’ and the Nostalgia 77 one which is a suitable touch as when Ms. Shepherd was at the Jazz Café last year, those kings of the dancefloor, JazzCoTech did a video for ‘Four’ which is well worth a look (see below).

And talking of favourite remixes, Daisuke Tanabe (he of Burnt Progress 1.1 and Brownwood’s Elan Mehler) turns up again. This time with a leftfield broken b-box mix. Talkin’ of leftfield, Basic Soul Unit’s mix takes her vocals over the lake to Detroit!

Staying on the dancefloor, the album ends with yet another version of ‘Georgie Dilema’, this time Do Right go head to head with Earth Corporation.

Daft Punk - Homework

Oblivion

Review from Amazon:
After rocking the suburbs with the infectious and persistent "Da Funk" (with its amusingly pointless Spike Jonze video), Gallic pranksters Daft Punk unleashed Homework, an album that combined everything good about house music with everything bad about French pop and changed the face of dance music in the process. The sound of production duo Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem is a raw and dirty collage of cheap drum machines (wired for maximum swing) welded to endless filtered loops and embellished with everything from guitars to talk-box vocals. The beats are lifted straight from the Chicago House textbook, but the simple bass lines and catchy hooks make a listenable pop song from what would normally be a stripped-down DJ tool. Uncompromising yet totally accessible. --Matthew Corwine

J. S. Bach - The 6 Unaccompanied Cello Suites - Yo-Yo Ma

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Oblivion

No need for reviews. Just a little words of Yo-Yo Ma:
Playing Style (from wikipedia):
Ma has been referred to as “omnivorous” by critics, and possesses a more eclectic repertoire than is typical for classical musicians. A sampling of his versatility in addition to numerous recordings of the standard classical repertoire would include his recordings of Baroque pieces using period instruments, American bluegrass music; traditional Chinese melodies including the soundtrack to the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon; the tangos of Argentinian composer Ástor Piazzolla; an eclectic and unusual collaboration with Bobby McFerrin (where Ma admits to being terrified of the improvisation McFerrin pushes him toward); as well as the music of modern minimalist Philip Glass in such works as the 2002 piece, Naqoyqatsi. In 2006, a soundtrack album was released of the music from the 2005 film, Memoirs of a Geisha. He is known for his smooth, rich tone as well as his considerable virtuosity, including a cello recording of Niccolò Paganini's 24th Caprice for solo violin, Zoltán Kodály's cello sonata, and other demanding works.
